Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life
The Foundation for End-of-Life Care is a founding benefactor of the Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life, the nation's first comprehensive institute for the advancement of research, education and caregiving for those near death.
Mission
To improve care at the end of life through interdisciplinary scholarship, teaching and public outreach.
Goals
- To promote interdisciplinary scholarship and collaborative research in theology, medicine, the social sciences, and humanities related to care of the suffering and dying.
- To advance education on end-of-life care through development of innovative curricula for the university and broader academic community.
- To provide practical training in palliative and bereavement care for clergy, healthcare providers, and lay volunteers.
- To nurture traditional practices of compassionate presence within new models of care.
- To enhance public awareness of the opportunities and challenges at the end of life, and to foster dialogue about these issues among diverse communities.
- To guide public policy toward improving services for the dying and their families across a continuum of care.
- To create partnerships with other universities and institutions, particularly those representing minority communities.
